Susan Tate

Susan is a board certified color correction specialist with 24 years industry experience and owner of a 5-star boutique salon in Silicon Valley. This is where her background in science and her passion for mentoring young stylists evolved into her brandless teaching series, Real Talk Workshop.

After dropping her chemical engineering studies to become a stylist, Susan eventually found her hair home renting a chair in a small studio salon in Los Gatos, Ca. Working in this old fashioned mom-and-pop shop, she built her strong clientele through word of mouth alone based on the belief that integrity is everything, in all things life and hair.

Unexpectedly thrust into salon ownership at the end of 2014, Susan worked to create a space that reflected her values, that was intimate and authenticate. Phoenix Hair Salon has since become the highest rated certified sustainable salon in Silicon Valley.

Susan is committed to mentoring and growing new talent. She views working with an assistant as a heavy responsibility. The first salon experience can make or break a young stylist’s career. Wanting to become the best possible mentor, she sought advanced education through industry experts and learned of the American Board of Certified Colorists, receiving her board certification in 2017.

Shortly after, working stylists in her community began to ask for one-on-one classes or part-time assisting opportunities to tighten up their color game and she realized she could be that industry expert serving to elevate her community and began an independent teaching series, Real Talk Workshop. Her Real Talk classes focus on understanding the science behind the art and the technical skills needed to achieve better, lasting results on healthier hair.

When she isn’t immersing herself in everything hair color related, you’ll find her floating on an estuary with the sea otters doing stand up paddling, under a speaker stack at a hip hop show or working on her blog with the hopes of helping other women realize their own strength and potential.
